Freezer Not Freezing? Causes & Checks

When a freezer warms up, pay attention to frost, door closing and any change in fan sound. Those observations help distinguish an airflow issue from a component fault. This guide covers the common causes and the details worth recording before a technician arrives.

Tell the technician whether only the freezer is warm or the refrigerator compartment is affected as well. Describe visible frost and where it appears, along with any change in fan sound. The pattern helps guide diagnosis without assuming that every warming problem is a defrost heater failure.

Why a freezer not freezing needs quick action

A freezer should hold -18°C. At that temperature food stays safe indefinitely, though quality slowly declines. Once the interior climbs above -9°C, ice crystals start to melt and refreeze, which ruins texture. Above 4°C, thawed meat and seafood become a food-safety risk within hours. A full freezer with the door shut holds temperature for about 48 hours. A half-full freezer holds for about 24 hours. Those numbers give you a window to act, but not a long one.

There is also the appliance to think about. A freezer that cannot reach temperature runs its compressor continuously, which shortens its life. The sooner the fault is found, the smaller the repair tends to be.

Quick checks before you call

None of these steps needs tools, and all of them are safe:

  • Check the temperature setting. A bumped dial or a touch panel brushed by a grocery bag is a common culprit. Set the freezer to -18°C.
  • Look at the door and lid. Is something inside pushing it open? A frozen bag or an ice tray can hold the door ajar by a few millimetres.
  • Test the seal. Close the door on a strip of paper. If it slides out freely, the gasket is not sealing.
  • Clear the vents. Overfilled shelves block the airflow from the evaporator. Leave a gap at the back and around the vent grilles.
  • Listen. A healthy freezer hums and you can hear a fan. Silence, or a loud click every few minutes, points to an electrical fault.
  • Check the power. Confirm the plug is firmly seated and the breaker has not tripped, especially for garage freezers on shared circuits.

If the freezer is still warm after a couple of hours, stop troubleshooting. The remaining causes involve the defrost system, fans, sensors or the sealed system.

The main causes of a freezer not freezing

Our technicians see the same faults repeatedly. Match your symptoms to the table below.

Frost build-up and the defrost system

Most modern freezers are frost-free. A heater switches on several times a day to melt frost off the evaporator coil, and the water drains away. When the heater, its thermostat or the timer fails, frost keeps building until the coil is buried. Air can no longer pass through, so the freezer warms even though the compressor runs. A manual defrost buys a week or two, but the fault always returns until the part is replaced.

Evaporator fan failure

The evaporator fan moves cold air off the coil and around the compartment. When it fails, the area right next to the coil stays icy while the rest of the freezer warms. You may hear a grinding or chirping noise before it stops entirely. On fridge-freezers, a dead evaporator fan also causes a warm fresh-food section, since the same fan feeds the fridge.

Condenser side problems

Dust-clogged condenser coils cannot shed heat, and a failed condenser fan makes it worse. The compressor overheats and cuts out on its overload protector. Garage and basement freezers suffer most, because nobody cleans behind them. Vacuuming the coils twice a year is the single best piece of prevention.

Chest freezers and garage freezers in Calgary

Calgary garages swing from -30°C in January to over +30°C in a July heatwave. Many freezers are not rated for that range. In deep cold, a basic thermostat may think the freezer is already cold enough and never start the compressor, letting food thaw. In summer heat, the compressor works flat out. If you keep a freezer in an unheated garage, look for a model designed for it, or ask about a garage kit. Natural Resources Canada's ENERGY STAR Canada program lists efficient models and explains the ratings if you are weighing a replacement.

Protecting your food while you wait

Keep the door closed. Every opening dumps cold air and shortens the safe window. Group the frozen items together so they insulate each other. If the repair will take more than a day, move the contents to a neighbour's freezer or a cooler packed with ice. Food that still has ice crystals can be refrozen safely, though quality suffers. Food that has been above 4°C for more than two hours should be discarded.

We provide same-day freezer repair across Calgary when you call early in the day, and we also offer service in Airdrie and the other towns around the city.

What the repair visit looks like

The technician measures the actual temperature in the freezer, inspects the evaporator for frost, and tests the defrost heater, thermostat, fans and sensors in order. Most freezer repairs are finished in one visit because the common parts ride along in the van. If the fault is in the sealed system, we explain the options and the expected life of the appliance before any work begins. You receive an honest quote after the assessment, and every repair carries a 90-day parts and labour warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my freezer not freezing but the fridge is cold?
On most fridge-freezers the freezer is where cold is made, so this pattern is unusual and usually points to a failed evaporator fan, a defrost problem or a damper stuck open. A technician can confirm the cause in a single visit.

How long does food last in a freezer not freezing properly?
A full freezer with the door closed holds a safe temperature for roughly 48 hours. A half-full freezer holds for about 24 hours. Once food thaws above 4°C for more than two hours, discard it.

Should I unplug a freezer that is not freezing?
No. Leave it running unless it smells of burning or trips the breaker. A running freezer holds some cold, and the technician can see the fault in action.

Can a chest freezer in the garage be repaired?
Yes. Chest and upright freezers share the same components as fridge-freezers: compressor, thermostat, condenser and gasket. We repair them in garages, basements and utility rooms across Calgary and the surrounding area.

Is frost in the freezer always a defrost problem?
Often, but not always. A torn gasket or a door left ajar also lets in moist air that freezes. The pattern tells the story: frost around the door edge points to the seal, while a wall of frost on the back points to the defrost circuit.
