Ice Maker Not Making Ice? A Guide

An empty ice bin does not always mean the ice maker itself has failed. Water delivery, settings and freezer conditions all matter. This guide explains what to note before booking and how a technician narrows the cause for your particular model.

When ice production changes, note whether the water dispenser still works, whether the bin is seated and whether the freezer has also warmed. Record any code and the model number. These details help distinguish a water-delivery concern from a temperature or ice-maker component fault.

Ice maker not making ice? Rule out the simple things first

Before you assume a part has failed, check the basics. These take five minutes:

  • Is the ice maker switched on? Most units have a wire arm or a paddle. If the arm is up, the ice maker is off. Some touch panels have a separate ice-off setting.
  • Is the water supply open? Find the shut-off valve under the sink or behind the fridge and confirm it is fully open.
  • Is the freezer cold enough? Ice makers need about -18°C. At -12°C or warmer, cycles slow down or stop completely.
  • Is the bin full or jammed? A single frozen clump can hold the arm up and stop production.
  • Has the filter been changed? A filter older than six months restricts flow enough to starve the fill cup.
  • Did you just install it? A new or reconnected ice maker needs up to 24 hours to produce the first batch.

If everything checks out and the bin is still empty after a day, the problem lies in one of the three systems below.

Why an ice maker not making ice is usually a water problem

Water has to travel from the wall, through a valve, along a thin tube and into the fill cup. Any restriction along that path starves the mould. The inlet valve is the most common failure. It is a small electric solenoid. When its screen clogs or the coil weakens, it sticks shut or lets through a trickle. The fill tube is the second suspect. It runs through the freezer wall and freezes solid if the valve leaks slightly or the water pressure is low.

Calgary's hard water and your ice maker

Calgary's supply is naturally hard. It comes from the Bow and Elbow rivers, which pick up minerals from the Rockies. The City of Calgary's drinking water page publishes the current hardness figures. That mineral load builds scale inside inlet valves, fill tubes and filters. In our experience, valves in Calgary homes fail earlier than the industry average. Filters also clog faster than the six-month rule suggests. Changing the filter on schedule is the simplest habit you can adopt. If you have a whole-home softener, the ice maker will thank you.

When the mould is not cold enough

The ice maker is only a small tray with a thermostat. It relies entirely on the freezer to freeze the water. If the freezer runs warm because of a frosted evaporator, a weak fan or a leaking gasket, the ice maker simply waits. It never reaches its trigger temperature. That is why an empty ice bin is sometimes the first warning of wider freezer temperature problems. Our technicians measure the freezer temperature before touching the ice maker for exactly this reason.

When the mechanism will not cycle

Once the water freezes, a small motor turns the ejector arms. A heater loosens the cubes, and the tray refills. Failures here show up as a full mould that never dumps, cubes stuck to the tray, or a motor that hums and stops. On many newer fridges the ice maker is a sealed module and is replaced as a unit. On others, the control board sends the signals. A board fault then looks like an ice maker fault from the outside.

Brand-specific ice maker patterns

Some designs have well-known weaknesses. Certain French-door fridges keep the ice maker in the fresh-food door. There it depends on a separate cooling duct that ices up. Others use a bottom-freezer module that suffers when the fill tube frosts over. Our LG fridge specialists carry the updated parts for these known issues, and so do our technicians for other brands. Bring your model number to the call and we can often tell you the likely fault before we arrive.

What a professional ice maker repair involves

The technician starts by measuring freezer temperature and water pressure. Both are quick to check and rule out entire branches of the diagnosis. Next, they test the inlet valve, inspect the fill tube, and run a manual harvest cycle on the module. Most ice maker repairs are completed in one visit with parts from the van. We provide ice maker repair for all major brands, and you get an honest quote after the assessment. Every repair carries a 90-day parts and labour warranty.

Keeping the ice flowing

A few habits go a long way:

  • Replace the water filter every six months, or sooner in a hard-water home.
  • Empty and wash the ice bin monthly so old cubes do not fuse into a block.
  • Keep the freezer at -18°C and do not overfill it.
  • If you go away for more than a week, switch the ice maker off and empty the bin.
  • Check the supply line for kinks whenever the fridge is moved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my ice maker not making ice but the water dispenser works?
The dispenser and the ice maker share a supply but use separate valves and tubes. A working dispenser means water reaches the fridge. The fault is in the ice maker's own valve, the fill tube or the module itself.

How long does an ice maker take to make ice after a repair?
Expect the first batch within a few hours and a full bin within 24 hours. Production speed depends on freezer temperature and water pressure.

Can a clogged water filter stop an ice maker?
Yes. A filter older than six months, or one clogged by Calgary's hard water, restricts flow. The result is small cubes or none at all. Replace the filter before assuming a part has failed.

Is an ice maker not making ice worth repairing?
In most cases, yes. Valves, fill tubes and modules are routine replacements and take a single visit. If the freezer itself is the problem, fixing it protects your food as well as your ice.
